ABOUT

Larry Hardesty (vocals/steel-string guitar) was already a professional musician at the age of ten: he went to grade school on a scholarship from the Washington Cathedral Choir. When he was in sixth grade, the choir performed Leonard Bernstein’s third symphony under the composer’s direction, and Larry and Lenny struck up a friendship; the Bernstein Collection at the Library of Congress lists 37 letters from Larry, including a couple compositions. In eighth grade, Larry was the only student in his music theory class. As an undergrad, Larry went to the University of Virginia, graduating in three years with an English major and a music minor. As a sophomore, he was the only student in his tonal-counterpoint class. Larry has been performing original music in the Boston area since 1991, and after an eight-year hiatus to concentrate on parenting three children (Lani, 7, and Dylan and Beckett, 5), he and his longtime collaborator Brant re-formed the Hopeful Monsters in 2019.

Brant Grieshaber (guitars) is a consummate band leader, soloist, and sideman. He has shared the stage with jazz giants such as Bill Frisell (Grammy nominee), James Carter, and Charlie Hunter and he often performs and records with faculty from Berklee College of Music. He performs all over New England, from the Maine Music Society to the Beantown Swing Orchestra, from The Beehive to Johnny D’s. He also teaches guitar and composition at his studio in Boston, where students come from across the globe to explore the fingerboard. In 2007, Brant published The Ultimate Guitarist’s Survival Guide

Brant is happy to endorse Godin Guitars.

At the age of 8, Brant began classical and ragtime piano, studying with Bates College professor Dr. Marion Anderson. At 13, he took up jazz and rock guitar. He earned his BA at Berklee College of Music, studying with Garrison Fewell and Bret Wilmott. At the Boston Conservatory, he did graduate studies in classical composition with Osvaldo Golijov. He has also studied guitar with the jazz/fusion giant, Frank Gambale.

Austin Klipp (keyboards) has played the piano for more than 25 years and is well versed in pop/rock, jazz, Latin, and classical. He can be seen performing in solo and dueling-piano shows all over the New England area, as well as weddings, celebrations, and other special events. Keith Kirkpatrick  (bass guitar) started out playing ukulele when he was five years old. Then on to mandolin, guitar, cello, and upright bass. Seeing that getting progressively larger instruments had its problems, he moved on to progressively louder instruments and settled on electric bass guitar. In addition to being a composer and bandleader, Keith has played bass for rock, jazz, and world music groups in the Boston area and is currently playing with Bill Champitto and Big Blue World.

David DeSimone (drums) has been playing in various bands in the Boston area for 20 years.  When not refusing to give up his childhood dreams of rockstardom, he works at global health non-profit Partners In Health in medical infomatics.  Dave can also be heard in the original rock band The Rockmores and the surf/r&b outfit The Electrolux Combo.
